The Kaua‘i Board of Realtors distributed $11,000 in scholarships to graduating high school seniors from Kaua‘i’s high schools last week.
Letters of congratulations were mailed out to 11 graduates, recipients of college or vocational scholarships awarded annually through the KBR Scholarship Fund.
Originally, KBR was going to offer $6,000 to seven students, but after receiving 41 applications and narrowing down the list to 11, the KBR Scholarship Committee realized it was almost impossible to narrow the list to seven recipients.
The KBR leadership approved an additional $5,000 from the Scholarship fundraiser reserves for this year’s $11,000 total distribution.
Each student applied for the scholarships by completing a questionnaire that included a narrative on why they were applying and what their plans were for the future.
These were reviewed by volunteers from the Scholarship Committee with the finalists being interviewed in person.
Guidelines used to select the final recipients included academic achievements, responses to each applicant’s application as well as in-person interview, presentation skills including appearance and composure, financial need and participation in community service.
With Toni Ishimoto of the KBR at the helm, the Scholarship Committee included Kaua‘i Realtors and KBR affiliate members Mary Devine, Dimples Kano, Lisa Ledesma, Rowena Cobb, Michael Olsen, Nena Costales, Vianne Tabata and Karen Ono.
The KBR was founded in 1974 and promotes and maintains high standards of conduct in the real estate profession as expressed in the Code of Ethics of the National Association of Realtors.
KBR is committed to participating in and contributing to the local community by offering college and vocational scholarships, conducting annual school supply drives, hosting annual golf tournaments to benefit the Kaua‘i Food Bank as well as fundraise for its scholarship fund, participating in the Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity building projects and the Salvation Army Kokua Soup Kitchen.
