Anna Quibilan ran her first triathlon over the weekend and finished in first place in her division, said Stacy Ricciardi, instructor of Boot Camp by Stacy.
“This was her first time and she won first place,” Ricciardi said. “I’m so stoked. She was running with her mother at this event.”
Ricciardi said 25 women who live and work on Kaua‘i escaped for the weekend to take part in the 8th Annual Lanikai Sprint Triathlon on O‘ahu.
“The women have been training hard over the past 12 weeks, overcoming fears and tapping into the inner athlete in each of them,” Ricciardi said. “They went as a team and shared their Kaua‘i pride and aloha with the field. This was the biggest team ever.”
Quibilan, running in the female 20-24 age group, finished the event with a clock time of 1:23.43, good for 24th overall. That time was also the first finish for the team of 25 women.
The first finisher overall in the Lanikai Sprint Triathlon was John Flanagan of Honolulu, in 56:07, and the first woman finisher was Katherine Nichols, also of Honolulu, crossing seventh overall with a time of 1:01.37.
Ricciardi said the 25 women were part of 352 athletes who took part in the event, and are expected to be at Kalapaki Beach this morning when the YMCA of Kaua‘i and Swim Kaua‘i Aquatics host the Kaua‘i Loves You! Triathlon.
That event has sprint and supersprint distances, and is sanctioned by USATriathlon.
The swim in Kalapaki Bay starts at 7 a.m., followed by a bike ride around the Menehune Fishpond, and finishes with a run through the Kaua‘i Lagoons property.
Motorists using Nawiliwili Road, the Kipu bypass road and Halehaka Road should exercise caution this morning due to bicyclists using that route for the bike portion of the event.
Boot Camp by Stacy is an outdoor exercise class, and taking part in triathlons is just one way the women have fun, Ricciardi said.
Following today’s triathlon, Ricciardi said the women are setting their sights on a Southshore event being hosted by a canoe club, the “Tri Kaua‘i, on July 26.
