When it rains, it pours.
And, right now, Rip Curl’s Owen Wright is in the midst of a torrential downpour.
Life has been good for the 19-year-old Culburra Beach, Australia native.
Real good.
Wright came into the 2009 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) season with out much of a gameplan, he admitted.
No Xs and Os, no sophisticated, multi-tiered strategy, but merely to “just see how things go.”
Now four months in, the chronology goes something like this: three consecutive ASP Pro Junior victories, two, six-star Prime WQS keeper results, a wildcard into the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach, where he defeated Dane Reynolds and Kelly Slater consecutively en route to an equal ninth-place finish, and, finally, a runner-up finish in the six-star prime in Durban, South Africa.
The result?
The lanky, easy-going Wright finds himself No. 1 on the WQS rankings.
“I’m stoked with the way things are working out this year,” said a humble Wright in a press release from Rip Curl.
“I’m just taking things as they come and enjoying the ride along the way.”
With his eyes firmly planted on 2010 ASP World Tour qualification, look for Wright to continue his global competitive rampage while squeezing in a few Rip Curl Search trips when the schedule permits.
