KAPA‘A — Kapa‘a High School students in the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council class, Connect to the World, paid a visit to Kapa‘a Elementary School to introduce kindergartners to the concept of sustainibility as part of Earth Day.
The focus of their talk was on how to care for the ‘aina and the importance of the three R’s: Reduce, reuse and recycle. After a short skit showing where paper comes from and how the Earth is losing its forests, the students broke up into groups to participate in various activities.
With the help of the high school students, the keiki made bracelets with beads made from recycled magazine pictures, caterpillars made from empty egg cartons and animal puppets of recycled popsicle sticks and scrap materials. Students also decorated planters made from empty plastic bottles, planted papaya seeds and shared in a story about recycling centers.
All students were presented with a certificate of participation at the end of the event. When Kapa‘a High School teacher Chris Farina asked the kindergartners what they could do to help our planet, the overwhelming answer was, “Recycle!”
