Certainly there are important authorities in this world such as parents, teachers, presidents and more who prevent chaos in our world. But there is a deeper more divine authority who shares with us every moment of the day … should we listen?
There is a presence within each of us who acts as our personal guide. We may call it “intuition,” our “light” or simply “God’s friend” within. It takes but a moment to sit quietly and ask what is right for us. Sometimes it takes hours, days, even months; but finally we open to our “given” answer or solution. Listening to and trusting this inner authority is the key.
Our higher authority, God, has entrusted us with this gift of intuition. We may call it our “ears” of acceptance to what is right for us. Intuitive authority is that direct channel to God with no interruptions or static. All we have to do is turn up the volume and listen. Divine guidance is always there.
The Baha’i of Kaua‘i
Though God is the supreme authority over all created things, a child’s first authority figures are their parents. Through spiritual education, nurturing and discipline, parents help children learn to respect authority and to obey the laws of society. If children do not first learn to respect their parents, they will have no concern for others, will not accept the authority of God, and their moral development will be stunted.
The Baha’i writings provide the following counsel to parents: “The parents must exert every effort to rear their offspring to be religious, for should the children not attain this greatest of adornments, they will not obey their parents, which in a certain sense means that they will not obey God. Indeed, such children will show no consideration to anyone, and will do exactly as they please.”
