LIHU‘E — For more than 60 Cub Scouts, the sky was the limit Thursday.
The Cub Scouts of the Boy Scouts of America, Aloha Chapter, Kaua‘i, took part in the annual Cub Day Camp that mixed in a day of education and fun in the vicinity of Vidinha Stadium.
Part of the day was devoted to touring the Civil Defense and the Kaua‘i Police Department, where the group was broken down into smaller teams and allowed to get close-up views of the different departments.
“I didn’t realize the building was so big,” said Jolly Iwata, one of the Aloha Council coordinators. “This was the first time I got to see the inside of that building.”
The KPD officers got into the act with creative means of demonstrating some of the equipment they use in their jobs, and Cub Scouts were thrilled to be able to learn their top speeds as they ran toward officers equipped with radar guns.
“Is this where you eat your lunch?” asked one of the Cub Scouts as they toured the comfort of the air-conditioned Mobile Incident Command vehicle.
Capt. Ale Quibilan had to chuckle at the question, noting that the conference room was just one feature of the multi-million dollar vehicle.
“They’re touring the different sections of the department,” Quibilan said. “There are supposed to be about 50, or 60 Cub Scouts and Kathleen Langtad is taking care of them.”
Iwata said in addition to the police department, the Cub Scouts got to tour the Kaua‘i Fire Department’s Lihu‘e fire station, and engage in activities of their own including a Soapbox Derby where the Cubs were pitted against the U.S. Navy personnel that turned out from the Pacific Missile Range Facility.
Another highlight was the Egg Drop, where a helicopter would drop specially-wrapped raw eggs to see which would survive.
The Cub Day Camp is a preliminary to the annual Boy Scout Makahiki that will open its gates to the public on April 11 starting at 9 a.m. at the Kaua‘i Community College.
Admission to the event is a $5 donation that contains values from local businesses and organizations that surpass the donation price.
