LIHU‘E — The sun’s rays normally heat things, but the sun can also be harnessed to help cool buildings.
Solar attic fans are just one of the featured items that will be available for homeowners, consumers and business owners to inspect and learn more about when the Contractors Association of Kaua‘i opens the doors to its 2009 CAK Home Show presented by First Hawaiian Bank.
The show is the 17th one presented by CAK and will be open to the public from 2:30 to 9 p.m., April 3, and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., April 4, at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihu‘e.
As more and more businesses and homeowners look to alternative “green” techniques and items, the 2009 CAK Home Show will not only address the building industry. FHB, the event presenter for the past 17 years, will have its staff on hand to discuss business loans, business lines of credit, and on a more personal level, assist with private financial reviews on the options of protecting investments and 401Ks.
The show is also an opportunity for people to get better acquainted with leaders in the building industry as Jason Fujinaka, currently the traffic reporter for a Honolulu television station, comes back to Kaua‘i as an exhibitor with MHE Pacific that will showcase the autoclaved aerated precast concrete system as an alternative building material.
The 100 percent green material is termite resistant, thermal efficient and fire resistant with sound insulation qualities, states a CAK release.
Bill Dahle, a retired radio on-air personality, will do the honors of opening the doors as he did 17 years ago when the first CAK expo was held at the Kaua‘i High School gym, and with Joe Grace and his ‘ohana standing by with its local-style grinds, there will be more time to enjoy and learn about the latest offering of green products.
The solar attic fans will be available for inspection at both RSI/Rosa’s Roofing and Building Supply with another model being available for inspection from Hawai‘i Skylights, a firm based out of Kapa‘au, Hawai‘i.
“The fans have come a long way since they were introduced,” said Jay Robertson of RSI/Rosa’s. “When they first came out, some of the components were made out of plastic and there were limitations on using them in areas prone to sea winds.”
Robertson said today’s models are made out of aluminum and stainless steel making them usable in all areas of the island, and the fans have been re-engineered to make it easy to maintain.
Hawai‘i Skylights will also have models of its Solatub skylights.
Ferguson Enterprises will showcase the Mirabelle toilet which touts a 20 percent less water usage than the standard low-consumption models. The Mirabelle enjoys a 1.28 gpf usage, is gravity-fed and has been EPA WaterSense certified.
Additionally, Sean Andrade and his staff will have information on the Rinnai hot water on demand system that can reduce energy consumption by up to 40 percent over a conventional hot water heating system.
Islandwide Solar, based out of Kalaheo, will showcase its photovoltaic modules and microinverter system in preparation for the mandatory solar system installation on all new construction that will take effect starting Jan. 1, 2010.
No Volatile Organic Compound paints are being used in hotels, condominiums and medical facilities because one of the most obvious benefits is the elimination of the lingering smell of fresh paint.
Ron Garlie and his Puhi Paint staff will be able to provide information on the Devoe “Wonder Pure” line of paints that have no E.
The County of Kaua‘i is a cooperating sponsor of the show and will have representatives from the Building Division, Planning Department, Fire Department, Department of Water, the Civil Defense and the Housing Agency available at the show.
Additionally, the Civil Defense will have information to help people prepare for natural disasters such as tsunami, hurricanes, high winds, and flooding.
Visitors to the 2009 CAK Home Show can also sign up for an opportunity to go on a three-minute $500 shopping spree at the Big Save Market in Lihu‘e. The winner will be doing the spree on April 18.
