Laird Hamilton is widely known for his ability to ride the big waves, paddle, wake, sail and longboard and also for his charitable work with tow partner Dave Kalama to raise funds and awareness for Austism.
But now the Hawai‘i native has another type of board to add to his biography. The Honolulu Symphony announced Friday that Hamilton is one of two new honorary board members. Academy Award-winning actress Marcia Gay Harden was the other.
Both Hamilton and Harden are dedicated supporters of educational philanthropy, as well as many other civic organizations. They join a dedicated board of community leaders who are committed to keeping a world-class orchestra in Hawai‘i and offering high-quality music education programs in the state’s schools.
Hamilton grew up on O‘ahu and Kaua‘i and now resides on Maui. Earlier this month Hamilton released his first book, “Force of Nature: Mind, Body, Soul and Of Course, Surfing.”
Hamilton has also been featured several films, including the short documentary, “Path of Purpose” about his and Kalama’s charity for autsim.
Harden, a frequent visitor of Hawai‘i, won an Oscar for her role opposite Ed Harris in “Pollock.”
The Honolulu Symphony held its 12th Annual Symphony Ball on Saturday night at the Hawai‘i Convention Center.
