A three-run homer by Jessica Iwata helped fuel the Kaua‘i High School girls softball team to its 7-6 edge over Waimea, Wednesday evening at Isenberg Field.
Waimea had three runs in the seventh, but the effort fell a run short in the first outing for the Red Raiders for the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation girls softball season.
Naja Pungan started the fireworks for the Raiders with no outs by slamming into a one-strike pitch for a single to centerfield. Wailana Borrero, the Raiders’ pitcher, followed with a two bagger to leftfield that came on a 2-2 count to set the stage for Iwata’s three-run bang to right-centerfield.
Iwata, finishing the night 3-4, came back in the fifth frame with her second score of the night after stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch with no outs.
Borrero, 2-4 on the night, also scored twice after getting aboard on a pair of doubles. She also scored the game-winning run with one away.
Alissa Carvalho, opening the game on a bunt, finished with a 2-3 showing and scored twice.
Waimea secondbase Fiare Moe, going in for Krysta Kali, singled, Ariel Mizumoto singled in the fifth inning and MarieBeth Watanabe singled in the fourth for the Menehune hits.
Borrero picked up her first win of the season with just three hits allowed Waimea while striking out seven batters, walking one, but hitting three batters.
Shelly Koerte suffered the loss, finishing with a 2-1 record after giving up nine hits to Kaua‘i while striking out four and walking five.
With the win, Kaua‘i travels to the New Kapa‘a Town Park for a Saturday double-header against host Kapa‘a. First pitch goes at 10 a.m.
