ANAHOLA — A 34-year-old Moloa‘a man was reported missing Friday afternoon while surfing in Anahola at a spot called “Crack 14” located around the bend from Kuna Bay and had not been located as of press time, according to county press releases.
Lifeguards, firefighters, rescue specialists and the Coast Guard conducted an active search in the area without success.
At nightfall, fire officials said plans had been made for personnel to resume their search at daybreak. Coast Guard personnel were set to continue their aerial search through the night, but suspended their water search.
Earlier, two lifeguards searched in the water on a jet ski. Three rescue specialists were on board Air-1 doing an aerial search, while a land search was being conducted by firefighters on foot and a lifeguard on an ATV, according to the release.
Witnesses told Fire Department personnel that the man lost his board at around 1:40 p.m. while surfing at “Crack 14” and was trying to work his way in, but had not been seen since then.
His identity has yet to be released.
