Kaua‘i North Shore Lions Club recently agreed to a develop a close relationship agreement with the San Felipe Lions Club located in a small fishing village on the east coast of Baja California.
The Baja club was contacted 18 months ago when a slit lamp eye examination machine was shipped to the club. The slit-lamp is an instrument that eye doctors use to examine the health of the eyes. It allows the doctor to get a highly magnified image of the structures of the eye in order to thoroughly evaluate them for signs of infection or disease.
This slit-lamp was donated to the San Felipe club by the Kaua‘i North Shore Medical Clinic in Kilauea. Since receiving the machine the San Felipe Club has successfully performed nearly 750 eye exams and eye glass fittings in the San Felipe fishing village. This is in keeping with the Lions world wide traditional of bringing medical attention to the visually impaired.
The Kaua‘i North Shore Lions Club also has a local program of vision and hearing testing and will conduct testing at Hanalei Elementary School March 10.
The club is conducting a “Sight is Beautiful” poster contest that emphasizes good vision and is open to all elementary schools with a sponsoring Lions Club. North Shore Lions Club sponsors the contest for the Hanalei and Kilauea schools. The program also emphasizes the development of artistic ability in the students. The initial judging is at the club level and judging was completed by the North Shore Lions for Hanalei and Kilauea schools on February 11. The winners receive prizes and recognition and then the winning posters are forwarded to the Kaua‘i Zone which includes all Kaua‘i Lions Clubs. After Zone judging in March the winning posters will be forwarded to Lions District 50 in Honolulu for final state-wide judging which will take place in April. The winners will receive state-wide recognition and cash awards at the District 50 Lions Convention.
The Kaua‘i North Shore Lions raises funds for these projects with several yearly events including the “Pancakes and Hula Breakfast” which is scheduled for April 19 at Hanalei Elementary School. For more information visit kauainorthshorelions.org
