Storybook Theatre of Hawai‘i presents a monthly event called ‘Dakine Peace Garden Party’ being held in, and raising funds for, the Spark M. Matsunaga International Children’s Garden of Peace. Friday night is ‘Art Night’ in Hanapepe town and the stores, restaurants and galleries are open.
The Happy Enchalata Band was started by two pickers from upper Michigan in 1985. Current members are Marty Sheffer (mandolin, banjo, guitar and vocals), Denice Sheffer (vocals and percussion), Bill Dick (fiddle) and Larry Heller (bass). The band’s name is derived from a story about the lyrics of a song called “That’s the way the world Goes ‘Round” written by John Prine. The show is free and open to the public with donations to Storybook Theatre being gratefully accepted. Storybook Theatre is located at 3814 Hanapepe Road.
‘Parallel Lives’

This hilarious 80-minute comedy is a series of seven sketches that explore various relationships. The two-woman cast play the roles of both men and women ranging from five year olds in church to barflies in a honky-tonk bar. The show is a playful post-feminist satire that in many ways is a celebration of the diversity of women’s perspectives and experiences. “Parallel Lives” will play for three consecutive weekends through March 8. Performances are at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 4 p.m. Sundays. Ticket costs: adults, $20; students and seniors, $15. Seating is limited to 40 seats per show. Reservations are required. Band Champs state-wide competition

Four up-and-coming rap and reggae bands from Waimea and Kapa‘a High Schools take center stage tonight for Hawai‘i’s first-ever music band talent search, Band Champ: Tommy Patch and MC Chad; Roots Deep; 2nd Nature; and Sixth Sense.
This first semi-final competition will name the Kaua‘i band that will represent the island during the finale on O‘ahu March 21 at Pipeline Café. The finale will be taped and televised on KHON-TV (Fox) March 25. Headlining is “Ten Feet.” Tickets are $10 and available at the following outlets: Kmart; Kaua‘i Music and Sound; Jack Wada Electronics and Hanalei Surf for $10. Burger King customers who purchase a value meal can receive a $5 voucher to redeem at the locations above. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Kupaianaha, with Pat Cockett, Manulele Clarke and Pancho Graham will perform a benefit concert for Kukulu Kumuhan ‘O Anahola, a newly formed foundation for Anahola keiki and teenagers.
Translated the organization’s name means “Building together self-identity through cultural values.” The intent is to host monthly family events at the Anahola Homestead Park pavilion. The foundation was formed in response to the three teen suicides that took place in Anahola last October.

Kaua‘i Path with the League of American Bicyclists will sponsor their first class in Lihu‘e. Participants will learn not only the basics in bicycle maintenance, but also practice techniques for riding in traffic. There will be four hours of classroom instruction and five hours in the saddle.
Semi-retired physician and vice president of Kaua‘i Path, Randy Blake and League certified instructor Jeri El-Swaity will co-teach the two-day course from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the AARP office in Lihu‘e. E Kanikapila Kakou is an informal backyard Hawaiian music jam session promoting aloha through song among Kaua‘i residents by showcasing Hawai‘i’s diverse and talented composers, musicians and kumu hula sharing songs and chants. This week Eric Lee, composer and song writer for Na Kama Trio. This Garden Island Arts Council sponsored event happens every Monday through April.

Fitness walking was specially designed to utilize Nordic walking poles. It’s a low-impact, total-body exercise for all ages and physical conditions. Nordic Walking instructor Esti Grinpas offers this two-week class from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday for consecutive weeks. Total cost is $18. Poles provided. YWCA of Kaua‘i is hosting a Koke’e Stream clearing project and establishment of a rainforest native plant garden on the Camp Sloggett grounds, spearheaded by Na Ki‘ai ‘O Koke‘e — the Stewards of Koke’e — a newly formed community-based, project-oriented organization.
Lodging at the camp will be free to all volunteers Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights on a first-come first-bed basis. Food and beverages will also be provided during the workdays. Bring gardening gloves, boots and eye protection, rakes, shovels, loppers, chain saws and weed eaters. From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. March 8 there will be a festival including all-day live music including KANU Ukes, Na ‘Opio ‘O Halele’a Tahitian Dancers, Papa’a Bay Boys,Shilo Pa and John Cruz with Sean Carillo. There are a few spots open for artists and crafters interested in having a booth (no fee) and community organizations interested in having an information booth.
