LIHU‘E — The Cost Control Commission recently recommended that the county hike its bus fares over the next two years.
The proposal was sent to Mayor Bernard Carvalho’s administration after the seven-member commission’s Feb. 9 meeting at the Mo‘ikeha Building. It will be forwarded to the Kaua‘i County Council in ordinance form for final approval.
If passed, the price for a one-way adult fare on a fixed mainline route will jump from $1.50 to $2; for senior citizens and youth with identification, the increase would go up $0.75 to $1.
No changes were proposed for the shuttle fares, which were added in 2006, according to Tranportation Director Janine Rapozo.
Under the proposal, frequent rider monthly passes, which have not been increased since 2001, would go from $15 to $20 on July 1, then up to $25 a year later.
There would be a slight savings in buying a six-month or 12-month pass.
The recommendation proposes keeping the rates for these passes the same this year, then increasing them in 2010 from $90 to $120 for a six-month pass and $120 to $240 for a 12-month pass.
