Mai’lika Napoleon was named the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation’s girls basketball Player of the Year for the second year in a row, the league announced on Wednesday. Waimea High School’s Malcolm Carter was named the boys POY.
Kapa‘a girls head coach Terri Maguire also received Coach of the Year honors for the second time in as many years.
Napoleon, the senior who is currently with her team on O‘ahu for the Hawaiian Airlines/Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association’s Division II State Girls Basketball Championships, said the honor was a surprise to her.
“There were a lot of good girls this year. (At the beginning of the season,) I thought to myself, ‘this would be a great competition,’” she said. “I’m pretty excited about it.”
Napoleon led the Lady Warriors (9-0) to their second KIF title and their second appearance at the state championships. Three of her teammates — Jondi Das, Tori Tuttle and Leina‘ala McCabe
“Being named Player of the Year means a lot to me; it’s my senior year too and it looks good for colleges,” she said.
Carter was named to the KIF Winter All-Stars for the first time of his basketball career at Waimea. The junior finished the season as the Menehune’s leading scorer.
The Kapa‘a Warriors, who on Tuesday won their first KIF title in at least four years, placed three players on the list — freshman Duke Pauli, and seniors Kekoa Prem and Kekoa Colipano. This is Prem’s second year as an all-star. Second-year coach Phillip Baclayan was named the boys Coach of the Year.
Still relatively fresh from their Division II state soccer title — the first ever for a Neighbor Island team — the Kapa‘a Warriors placed five players as all-stars, including the Player of the Year, Ikaika Fuerte. Fuerte was not only the team’s leading scorer, but also the league’s. He was named to the state team and was recognized as the Most Outstanding Player at the tournament.
Fuerte is no stranger to the all-stars list and neither is his coach, Kevin Cram, who was named the boys soccer Coach of the Year. He coached the Warriors (10-0-1) to three straight KIF championships, and a state championship.
The Warriors also played in the state title game last season.
Kaua‘i’s Skye Shimabukuro, the senior who has accepted a scholarship to play soccer for the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, was named the girls soccer Player of the Year.
Teammates Ashlyn Ubongen and Brandi Gomes are making a repeat appearances as all-stars, as is Kapa‘a’s Dakota Barnett.
Kapa‘a head coach Colby Ayonon, who coached his Lady Warriors to the state title game, was named the Coach of the Year.
For paddling, strokers Xanni Dasalia and Dwayne Manago of Kaua‘i High School were named Most Valuable Paddlers and their coaches Doneen Stokes and Lori Parraga were the Coaches of the Year.
Of the six winter sports, swimming was the only one not to name an MVP.
