KALALAU — A 29-year-old male visitor was airlifted out of Kalalau Valley this afternoon after sustaining minor injuries.
Initially, he was taken to Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital and later transferred to Wilcox Memorial Hospital. He is in good condition, a county news release states.
Police received a call at around 12:15 p.m. after at least six people frantically waving in the valley alerted a tour helicopter and pointed to a large SOS written in the sand on the remote North Shore beach.
Air-1 and two rescue specialists from the Lihu‘e fire station responded to the call.
Upon arriving at the scene, the rescue specialists administered first aid to the man and then escorted him to the landing zone.
The man was flown to Waimea Canyon School Park, where awaiting medics transported him to Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital.
After receiving treatment at KVMH, he was transferred to Wilcox for further treatment.
A statement from Inter-Island Helicopters says the pilot assisted in the rescue of a hiker who severed an artery on his left arm. The injury, which reportedly was caused by the hiker’s own knife, resulted in severe bleeding.
