2-4 p.m., Feb. 28, Kapa‘a Library meeting room
Kumu Puna Kalama Dawson is the featured guest speaker at the Wailua-Kapa‘a Neighborhood Association’s monthly meeting. He will be giving a free talk, “Sacred Wailua: Past and Present” and the public is welcome.
The Wailua ahupua‘a ascends from Wailua Bay to Mt. Wai‘ale‘ale. Within this district, there are six different heiau aligned from the beach to the island’s summit. Sacred archeological sites – petroglyphs, fishponds, a birthstone, and a bellstone are also part of the rich Hawaiian cultural heritage focused around Wailua River.
Dawson will share her in-depth knowledge about Wailua which was the religious and political center of Kaua‘i and the ancestral home of Kaua‘i’s ali‘i since the 13th century. By the mid-1800s, Queen Deborah Kapule, Kaua‘i’s last reigning queen, had her home in the area encompassing the old Coco Palms Hotel.
The business portion of the meeting will provide updates on local issues and allow time to hear new concerns.
