LIHU‘E — There will be a playoff for the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation boys basketball title no matter what. This week will just determine which one or how many we will have.
Kaua‘i High School’s boys basketball team got one step closer to locking up Round 2 of the boys KIF season with its 58-42 win over Waimea High School on Wednesday night. If the Red Raiders (3-0 Round 2, 4-3 KIF) beat Round 1 champs of Kapa‘a High School (2-1 Round 1, 5-2 KIF) on Saturday, then there will be only one playoff for the title. A win by Kapa‘a will mean a playoff for Round 2, before determining the KIF champions.
The Raiders, on Wednesday, were led by Davone Florence who finished with 22 points and five rebounds. Kaleo Cummings added 11 points and nine rebounds. Scott Taylor had eight points and Teila Huni had five rebounds.
Waimea had two players finish in double digits. Menehune leading scorer Malcolm Carter finished with 15 points despite a rare 2-of-7 from the free throw line. V.J. Carineo had an overall good showing on Wednesday with 14 points and four rebounds.
Waimea had a strong first quarter when trailing 9-3, the Menehune scored four unanswered points to end the quarter at 9-7. The Raiders went on to outscore the Menehune in each of the following quarters. The Raiders at one time led by as many as 16 points and as few as two points.
