Francisco Balilea
Francisco F. Balilea of Kapa‘a died Feb. 10, 2009, at his residence at age 97. Born Oct. 16, 1911, in Badoc, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, he was a groundskeeper.
He was preceded in death by first wife Carmen Balilea.
He is survived by wife Lorna Balilea, daughters Felicitas (Federico) Fagarang and Irene (Eugene) Perez, sons Elmer “Bala” Balilea and Charleston (Adeline) Balilea, 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Friends may visit with the family from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20, at Borthwick Mortuary Chapel in Koloa, and again from 8-9:45 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, at St. Catherine’s Church in Kapa‘a where Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m.
Burial to follow at St. Catherine’s Church Cemetery.
Casual attire is suggested.

Karen Valpoon
Karen Aloma Valpoon of Anahola died Feb. 3, 2009, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at age 62. Born Aug. 20, 1946, in Honolulu, she was a human resources assistant with Hilton Kauai.
She was preceded in death by companion Richard “Dick” Wildman, and parents Amil and Florence Valpoon.
She is survived by brother Amil Tinoa (Beverly) Valpoon of Anahola; sisters Dr. Marie (John) Leekley of Wisconsin and Deborah (Pat) Valpoon-Colman of Anahola; nephews and nieces Ekolu and Nani Valpoon of Hanalei, Mike and Liz Coleman of Moloka‘i, Travis and Alia Coleman of Hanalei, Carla Coleman of Anahola, K.J. Leekley of Honolulu and Tracey Ann Leekley of Wisconsin; grandnieces and grandnephews Teanna and Cody Valpoon, Josh and Cody Maka, Analese, Nadia and Nicki Coleman, Kekai Phetteplace; and uncle Archie, Aaron and Armand Soken of Honolulu.
Visitation from 10-noon on Saturday, Feb. 21, at Anahola Hawaiian Church; service at noon.
Burial of Karen’s ashes will be done privately at a later date.
Casual attire is suggested and flowers will be accepted.

Luis Ramirez Moises of Puhi died Feb. 12, 2009, at his residence at age 88. Born Aug. 25, 1920, in Narvacan, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, he was an irrigator for Lihu‘e Plantation and a carpenter.
He is survived by wife Clarita Moises; children Lorenzo (Marlene) Moises, Douglas (Charmaine) Moises, Letitia (Russell) Kyono, Sam (Holly) Moises, Lucky Mark (Donna) Moises and Sei-San Moises; sisters Victoria Clarin and Jovencia (Tom) Esperon; sister-in-law Jovita Moises; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, at Immaculate Conception Church; Mass at 10 a.m.
Burial to follow at Kalapaki Bay Memorial Park.
Mary Fontana
Mary A. Fontana (Nonna) died Feb. 2, 2009.
She is survived by sons Bill Fontana and Jim Fontana, daughter-in-law Barbara Fontana, four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many friends.
Private services were held Feb. 13, 2009, on Kaua‘i. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Assistance League of Honolulu in her memory.
Nancy Tipple
Nancy Ruth (Bowen) Tipple of Kilauea, died Feb. 15, 2009, at age 69. Born April 28, 1939, she was a registered nurse.
She was preceded in death by parents Wilhelmina and Lucien Bowen.
She is survived by husband Charles; daughters Holly (Vince) Nomura of Bettendorf, Iowa, Heather Tipple of Westwood, Calif., and Deborah (Glenn) Matty of Sacramento, Calif.; sister Louise (Landin) Van Buren of Oneonta, N.Y.; brother James (Ann) Bowen of Guilderland, N.Y., and John (Phyllis) Bowen of Catskill, N.Y.; and two grandsons of Bettendorf, Iowa.

Kazuya Kuboyama
Kazuya Kuboyama of ‘Ele‘ele died Feb. 15, 2009, at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital at age 86. Born April 17, 1922, in Wahiawa, he was a retired carpenter.
He was preceded in death by brothers Setsuo Kuboyama and Yoshito “Peter” Kuboyama.
He is survived by wife Hinako Kuboyama, son Russell Kuboyama, daughter Leila Kuboyama, brother Richard (Mabel) Kuboyama, sisters Kimie (Michael) Fukuda and Hisako Kuwada, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation from 2-3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, at Kauai Soto Zen Temple in Hanapepe; service at 3 p.m.
Casual attire is suggested and the family requests flowers be omitted.

Kay Hiura Shimamoto of Kapa‘a died Feb. 8, 2009, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at age 98. Born June 14, 1910, in Lawa‘i, she managed and operated Roxy Sweet Shop in Kapa‘a in the 1940s.
She was preceded in death by husband Yoneo Shimamoto.
She is survived by sisters Edna (James) Takahashi of O‘ahu, Hanako (Hitoshi) Kawakami of California, Aiko (Jitsuo) Iwane of O‘ahu, Alice (Walter) Hiramoto of Wailua; son Albert (Clara) Shota of California; daughters Jane (Frank) Nakamura of O‘ahu, Karen (Ken) Kawamoto of O‘ahu, Gladys (Clifton) Moromisato of California and Sharon Hiura Lee of Kapa‘a; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Private services will be held. Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.
Rumarico Miguel
Rumarico Dulig Miguel of Sacramento, Calif., formerly of Waimea, died Feb. 8, 2009, in Fair Oaks, Calif., at age 90. Born Dec. 3, 1918, in Banna, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, he was a retired technical sergeant with the U.S. Air Force.
He was preceded in death by wife Nora Miguel, sister Consuelo Cuaresma and brother Emilio Olivas.
He is survived by nieces Lisa Huynh of Walnut Creek, Calif., Leah Goslen of Hercules, Calif., Patricia Cuaresma of Kekaha, and Marlene Greer of Lihu‘e; nephews Michael Olivas of Kaua‘i, Kenrick Shen of Pacific Groves, Calif., and Lawrence Cuaresma of Laguna Niguel, Calif.
Viewing from 10-2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20, at East Lawn Mortuary, 5757 Greenback Lane, Sacramento, Calif.; service at 2 p.m. followed by burial.

Eldon Naoto Kohatsu Sr. of Kaua‘i died Jan. 27, 2009, at Straub Clinic and Hospital at age 59. Born Nov. 17, 1949, in Honolulu, he was a former Hopaco warehouse manager.
He is survived by sons Eldon N. (Rolinda) Kohatsu Jr., Michael H.K. (Lani) Kohatsu of Honolulu, Brian T. Kohatsu and Dean K.N. (Dayna) Kohatsu of Kaua‘i; daughter Marisa T.U. (James) Berardi of Kaua‘i; father Gary N. Kohatsu; brothers Wesley R. Kohatsu of Honolulu, Garrett S. Kohatsu of Kaua‘i; sister Sharleen K. (Arthur) Isoshima; 23 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Visitation from 8-9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Aloha Church (makai side) across from Taco Bell in Lihu‘e; services from 9-11 a.m. The family requests casual attire and no flowers.
He will be laid to rest with his wife at a later date at Kalapaki Bay Park Memorial Garden.
Edward Chan
Edward Sik-Kang Chan of Honolulu died Feb. 6, 2009, at age 93.
He was preceded in death by wife Yin Lee and grandson Mason.
He is survived by sons Dennis (Mari) of Lihu‘e and Bill; daughters Polly, Rufina, Sylvia (Jacky) So; grandchildren Christopher (Evie Joy), Crystal (Mitchell) Pinzon and Mia, Belinda and Alina So; great-granddaughter Maianna Pinzon.
Chinese Buddhist services from 9:30-11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19, at Nuuanu Memorial Park and Mortuary with cremation to follow.
