Kaua‘i’s top young tennis wouldn’t settle for less this weekend as No. 1 Sarah Kukino and No. 1 Chas Okamoto won their divisions this weekend at the DT-Holua Junior Open in Kailua-Kona.
In the tournament that ran from Feb. 6 to 8, Kukino won two matches before earning her spot in the final. Kukino beat Tayler Duarte in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-1 and went on to beat Scout Shutter in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-2.
She won the Girls 16 Singles division by defeating Gabrielle Gorence, 6-1 and 6-4.
Okamoto also won two matches before securing his spot in the finals. Okamoto beat Zandrix Acob in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. He then beat Daniel Tada, 6-0, 6-1.
Okamoto won the Boys 16 Singles, beating No. 2 Kallen Mizuguchi, 6-3, 6-2.
This is the second straight tournament win for Kukino. Last month, Kukino won the Girls 16 Singles at the Wailuku Winter Junior Sectionals tournament.
Okamoto was also in the tournament and placed second in his division. Earlier this month, Okamoto was the lone high school student playing against the Gustavus Adolphus College team in exhibition matches at the Kiahuna Tennis Club.
Okamoto is expected to play in another tournament this weekend on O‘ahu.
