PUHI — Chocolate is synonimous with Valentine’s Day, and first-year students in the culinary program at Kaua‘i Community College are planning something special for Friday’s Bake Sale, the day before Valentine’s Day.
The highly successful Bake Sale enters its third week and chef Jason Sunada, the instructor for the bake shop class, said the students will be offering chocolate cake, cheesecakes, chocolate mousse in white, or dark chocolate, chocolate-covered strawberries and assorted truffles.
“This is in addition to the basic offerings of rolls, breads, assorted pies and chiffon cakes,” Sunada said. “But the Valentine’s Day items will be on a limited basis so people need to shop early for best selection.”
The Bake Sale opens each Friday through February at 10 a.m. at the KCC dining room and remains open until noon.
“People have been very supportive of the students,” Sunada said. “What they don’t realize is that because most of the items sell out quickly, the students feel good about what they’re doing and the learning they go through becomes worthwhile. The customers have been really nice and the students really feel good about what they’re doing.”
The Bake Sale will climax with the Grand Buffet on Mar. 4 which, according to Billy Gibson, one of the culinary arts instructor, is already sold out.
“This is an event where people get to see and taste what the students have accomplished in their classes,” Gibson said. “And to have an event like this sell out says a lot about how far the students have come from the time they started.”
The Grand Buffet combines the talents of the bake shop students with students in Chef Martina Hilldorfer’s class on gourmet appetizers.
Gibson said the students will be involved in the 23rd Annual American Culinary Federation’s Brunch this Sunday starting at 7 a.m. and running until 11 a.m.
The culinary arts students will be working alongside chefs from some of Kaua‘i’s finest eateries to produce the largest brunch on the island.
Initially, Gibson said they printed out 2,000 tickets for the event, and with just several days remaining, there are only a few more tickets left.
“It’s been selling really well,” said Mel Bacio of the KCC dining room. “If you’re planning on going, you will need to hurry before it sells out.”
Ticket prices are $15 in advance (from the KCC dining room), or $18 at the door for the remaining tickets. Children ticket prices are $5.
Following the Bake Sale, Gibson said the students will also be involved in the annual KCC Gala on April 17 that will feature guest chefs Alan Wong and D.K. Kodama.
Gibson said tickets for that event will be available shortly.
