Bernardo Garcia “Andong” Reyes Sr. of Kapa‘a died Jan. 27, 2009, at Garden Isle Healthcare Center at age 86. Born June 16, 1922, in Galimuyad, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, he was a retired irrigator at Lihue Plantation and laborer at Kauai Nursery and Landscaping Inc.
He was preceded in death by parents Rufino and Marcosa Reyes, brothers Alfredo and Alejandro Reyes, and grandchildren Brandon and Sarai Reyes.
He is survived by wife Patricia Gagarin Reyes; daughters Luisita (Aliivaa) Valaau of Honolulu and Clarissa (Brian Cadiam) Reyes of Kapa‘a; sons Bernardo (Eliros) Reyes Jr. of Puhi and Edmundo Reyes of Kapa‘a; sisters Rosa Naungayan and Caridad Lanuza, both of the Philippines; brothers Jose Reyes, Carlito Reyes, Enrique Reyes, all of the Philippines; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Leonido Gagarin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5, at Borthwick Mortuary Chapel in Koloa, and again from 9:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 6, at St. Catherines Church in Kapa‘a where Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Burial to follow at St. Catherines Church Cemetery.
Borthwick Kauai Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
Yasuo Minatoya
Yasuo Minatoya of Lihu‘e died Jan. 15, 2009, in Wailuku, Maui, at age 88. Born July 15, 1920, in Lihu‘e, he was a self-employed painting contractor.
He is survived by son Richard (Setsuko) Minatoya.
Funeral services at 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 6, at the Lihu‘e Hongwanji Mission.
Casual attire is suggested.
