A series of workshops entitled “Ke Ala Pono: Healthy Living” is being offered for seniors 60 and older with chronic health conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure and emphysema.
The next series begins Thursday and will be held consecutive Thursdays for six weeks from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Future workshops are planned for different locations around the island. Registration is limited to 16 participants and their caregivers. Participants will be introduced to practical skills for healthy living while managing their ongoing health condition.
Topics to be covered include communicating effectively, tips for eating well, relaxation, exercise, developing action plans, problem solving and managing symptoms or problems such as fatigue, pain and isolation.
The Healthy Living program was developed by Stanford University and is being implemented throughout the country. The program is sponsored by the county’s Agency on Elderly Affairs in partnership with the state Department of Health.
Kaua‘i’s workshops are part of a statewide initiative called Healthy Aging Partnership – Empowering Elders. For more information call Charlyn Nakamine with the Agency on Elderly Affairs, 241-4476 or Jan Pascua with the Department of Health, 241-3564.
