HANAMA‘ULU — Applications are now available for 40 new affordable rental units in Kalepa Village phase four, which is located in Hanama‘ulu across from King Kaumuali‘i Elementary School.
The units are nearing completion and will be ready for occupancy in April, a county news release said Tuesday.
“Providing permanent affordable housing for our residents is a top priority for us. We are focusing a lot of effort in this regard, and are very pleased that 40 more affordable rental units will soon be available for occupancy,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr.
Applications can be picked up at the Kalepa Village management office: Hawai‘i Affordable Properties, Inc., 4535 Kalepa Circle. The office is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.
The deadline to submit an application is 5 p.m., Feb. 20.
Selection will be determined by a lottery, which will be at 3 p.m., March 9, at the Kalepa Village recreation center.
Applicants must meet all eligibility requirements including income limits.
Seventeen of the units are reserved for residents earning 80 percent or less of the Kauai median household income, while the remaining 23 are for families earning 120 percent or less of the KMHI.
The monthly rents for families earning 80 percent of the KHMI are as follows: one-bedroom, one bath, 700-square-foot apartment, $700; two-bedroom, one bath, 847-square-foot apartment, $800; and three-bedroom, two baths, 942-square-foot apartment, $900.
For those earning 120 percent or less of KMHI, the monthly rents are: one-bedroom, one bath, 700 square foot apartment, $850; two-bedroom, one bath, 847-square-foot apartment, $975; and three-bedroom, two baths, 942-square-foot apartment, $1,175.
Services such as electricity, gas, telephone, and cable television are not included in the monthly rent for either category.
Amenities at the apartment complex include: refrigerator, stove, washer and dryer in each unit; parking; solar-heated water; accessible units; recreation center; playground area; and an on-site resident manager.
Kaua‘i County acquired the Kalepa Village project site in 1994.
The first phase was completed in 1997, adding 60 rental units to Kaua‘i’s affordable housing inventory. The second phase of 40 units was finished in 2004, while the third phase with 40 units was completed in March of last year.
Developed by the County Housing Agency, the fourth and final phase brings the total number of affordable units at Kalepa Village to 180.
