Wake up and speak up
Yes, we care about the 500 children who were just killed in Gaza.
We also question why President Bush or President Obama did nothing to prevent the killings. Bush was still in power and Obama was in-coming and neither one of them said a word in defense of the innocent people in Gaza.
Israel has carte blanche to do anything it wants. They are basically doing what was done to the Jews in Germany during the Holocaust.
America keeps funneling money to Israel without any conditions and we are all so afraid to say anything because the Israeli lobby is so strong in America.
My solution is that we focus on the human rights issue and ask every person in America to protest this senseless killing of innocent children and families. When you have up to 1,300 dead in Gaza and 5,000 wounded and only 28 in Israel, that is a problem.
Someone said many years ago that “evil flourishes when good men do nothing” and unfortunately, America does absolutely nothing when it comes to Gaza killings that are done by Israel.
When are we as Americans going to wake up and speak up.

It’s not going to happen
I am of Arab decent, and even I can see the obvious bias and hatred of Israel by the world’s media and even some Christian churches.
This is very interesting as the only thing keeping America from being judged by God is their support of Israel.
America must have a death wish because once again The Garden Island as well as the rest of the media left continues to concentrate on the damage to the Palestinian civilian population in the Gaza Strip while totally ignoring all of the Jewish civilian casualties from the continual rocket attacks from the so-called Palestinians for over a year.
Until 60 years ago, the Palestinians as we know them today did not exist. They were not interested in that piece of land until Israel once again became a nation as the bible predicted over 2,000 years ago. The small group of Palestinians can easily be absorbed by the Arab nations that surround Israel. But the Arabs want the conflict to continue for the destruction of Israel. That is their goal and not peace.
That small piece of land does not belong to the Palestinians. It was given to the Jews by the God of the bible unconditionally over 4,000 years ago. For those who do not believe in the God of the bible, you can disprove his existence by the total destruction of Israel.
Why has Israel continued to exist when so many of its enemies want its total annihilation? The true God of the bible will not allow this to happen. Once again, the 100 percent accuracy of bible prophecy would be destroyed by simply destroying Israel. It’s not going to happen.

Respect culture without hindering progress
Yes, Mr. Tolbe, in response to your article (“Respect other cultures,” Letters, Jan. 26), I do have the greatest respect for all peoples’ cultures as long as that respect doesn’t discriminate or hurt someone else whose culture or race may be different.
I played baseball in Japan for five years and admired and respected all my Japanese teammates and their abilities and styles of life — and their culture.
I certainly admire the beautiful young women in the Miss Filipino contest and have absolutely no problem with their honoring Filipino women only. If African American, Caucasian or Orientals wish to hold similar contests, that too is fine with me.
But, Mr. Tolbe, the final sentence of your nice letter is where I disagree. You say, “There are lots of other leagues that youths can play in.”
On Kaua‘i, outside of KIF baseball where every player who has the ability can participate, there are no other leagues (other than AJA) where a young man can get further baseball experience.
Again, I commend and applaud the people in AJA baseball for having a league where players of all ages can participate. I only ask that they let any person with the ability play in their league and not limit them because of their race, color or ethnic background. Have respect for a culture, but not if it means barring a young man from possibly furthering his dream of playing baseball at the college level and getting his education in the process.
Yes, Mr. Tolbe, I will continue to promote student-athletes which I have done most of my life — 25 years at UCLA and 20 years on Kaua‘i.
And, as I said before, my only restriction on whom I choose to help will be his/her desire, ability and scholastic aptitude, nothing else.

Just a quick note to say mahalo to all of the staff, vendors and great guests who enjoyed Coconuts Island Style Grill & Bar. You were all great, most of the time.
Doors open and doors close and sometimes the hallway is unpleasant. Hopefully, change will be the engine of success.
