HANAPEPE — Kaua‘i High School’s boys soccer team beat Waimea High School 3-1 yesterday at Hanapepe Stadium with goals from Gerry Rayray, Daniel Victor and the Red Raiders’ starting goalkeeper Colsen Fernandez.
Fernandez, who had been the Raiders’ main keeper for the season, was switched to play forward in the second half after Waimea’s lackluster beginning. (Kaua‘i’s girls team makes similar move, taking starting keeper Jessica Iwata and moving her up in the second half.)
The Raiders took one shot on Fernandez before Keaka Canute scored on a penalty kick. Canute’s PK was the second of the match as Kaua‘i’s Rayray scored one earlier.
Kaua‘i ran a high-powered offense that took 29 shots total compared to Waimea’s six — four of which were late in the second half when Waimea enjoyed a short surge in play.
Kaua‘i now has the upperhand against Waimea in the season. The two teams split the first two meetings with Kaua‘i winning the first 2-1 and Waimea winning the second, also 2-1.
Both teams are trying to catch the defending Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation champs of Kapa‘a High School. The Warriors have yet to lose a match, but tied their season opener against Waimea 0-0.
There are three weeks left in the season before the state tournament on O‘ahu.
For the girls, star forward Skye Shimabukuro will have to sit out Kaua‘i’s next game, on Wednesday against Kapa‘a because she was issued a red card following a collision with Waimea’s goalkeeper Jayme Jacinto.
She had received a yellowcard for an incident earlier in the game, but her final foul was heavily contested. The ball seemed to have been in the air and both girls went for it resulting in a collision that brought them both to the ground. Leaving the game and forced to watch the rest of it from the sidelines, Shimabukuro finished with 12 shots and one goal.
Ashlyn Ubongen scored three consecutive goals — her first when she broke away with Waimea’s Chaelyn Briones chasing her, the second off an assist from Brandi Gomes and the third when she was on the receiving end of a goal kick by Jacinto. Ubongen fired off 11 shots in the game.
Kaua‘i was up 4-0 by the half. Waimea was able to hold off the undefeated Lady Red Raiders for the majority of the second, until Iwata, the team’s starting keeper who had been moved up to play in the second, scored late off an assist from Wailana Borrerro.
In the junior varsity games, Waimea’s boys won their second straight game yesterday, defeating Kaua‘i with goals from Caleb Licke and Josh Quinlan.
Kaua‘i’s girls got another win, shutting out Waimea 5-0. Kelsey Cadiente, Jorden Decosta-Caalim, Meghen Fujimoto, Caitlyn Rapozo and Alexa Tamashiro all netted goals for the Raiders.
In the Island School exhibition game, Awol Own, Voyagers’ leading scorer Michael Chamberlain and the rest of the crew edged out the Warriors 2-1. Kapa‘a’s Torren Kimura scored the lone goal for the Warriors yesterday in the second half.
