PO‘IPU — A 66-year-old Canadian visitor apparently drowned yesterday afternoon on the South Shore, a county news release states.
The man was on a snorkeling tour with five divers near Kuhio Shores at around 1:40 p.m. when he ran into difficulty, county spokeswoman Mary Daubert said.
The instructor was assisting the man to shore when firefighters from the Koloa station arrived. Soon afterward, lifeguards from the Po‘ipu tower arrived on a Jet Ski and brought the man to shore.
The man was unresponsive.
The lifeguards and a firefighter performed CPR on the man as he was being prepared for transport to Wilcox Memorial Hospital and continued CPR while en route to the hospital.
The man was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The county spokesperson did not confirm by press time the name of the tour company or if the man suffered an apparent heart attack in the water as reported on emergency scanner traffic.
