Skye Shimabukuro snatched up the ball and set it for her free kick before Kapa‘a’s defenders even knew she was coming. With a light tap to teammate Ashlyn Ubongen launched a shot to the opposite corner and scored what would turn out to be the winning goal for the undefeated Lady Red Raiders, as Kaua‘i High School’s girls soccer team beat Kapa‘a High School 5-4 yesterday at Vidinha Stadium.
The Kapa‘a boys team won its afternoon game, 3-1 over Kaua‘i.
But it’s Kapa‘a’s Sierra Mayer who struck and scored early. Within the first minute Mayer put Kapa‘a on the board giving the Lady Warriors a jolt for the match.
Kaua‘i got off five plays after that — Ubongen and Shimabukuro took two shots each and Brandi Gomes sent one up for an open Malia Kagawa, but it was just out of her reach.
It was Kapa‘a’s Megan Souza who got the next goal of the match when she got past a defender, took a shot to the back corner and got it past Kaua‘i’s goalkeeper Jessica Iwata.
Kaua‘i didn’t score a goal until midway through the first half when Ubongen, on a one-on-two situation, beat her opponents to put one away. Minutes later, she scored again off an assist by Gomes.
A handball in the box sent Kapa‘a’s Larissa Crain to the line for a penalty kick. With that in, Kapa‘a reclaimed the lead.
That was short-lived because once the ball got to the other side of the field, Ubongen was able to draw Kapa‘a’s keeper Kiah Shigeta-Koizumi. As the ball came Shimabukuro’s way, with her back facing the goal, she blindly heeled in a shot that when in for the tie.
The teams were tied at the half.
Kaua‘i got its first lead of the game off Shimabukuro’s second goal of the afternoon. Shimabukuro was able to beat out her defender to the ball to give Kaua‘i the lead.
Entering in the second half, Dakota Barnett was able to make the most of it my tying up the game yet again.
Ubongen’s final and winning goal game at the 80th minute to give the Raiders their fourth straight regular season win and fifth official win dating back to their third-place finish at the Division II state championships.
Shimabukuro finished with 10 shots and two goals. Ubongen had nine shots and three goals.
Kapa‘a and Kaua‘i’s boys had another tough match on their hands, having just played each other earlier in the week.
Only this time, Kapa‘a was on the heavy attack. Kapa‘a took 19 shots on Kaua‘i’s Colsen Fernandez who finished the day with 13 saves.
Kapa‘a took three shots on Fernandez before the match’s first goal was scored, but that came from the other side. It was Kaua‘i’s Keala Lovell who got around Caleb Sarsona for the goal.
Not to be outdone, the defending Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation champions’ Kaisen Carrillo tied the game.
The Raiders (0-3) would hold the Warriors (3-0-1) to that score until Ikaika Fuerte passed to Sarsona who launched it in to take the lead.
Sarsona got open again and took a shot at the lone Fernandez. His shot bounced right out of Fernandez’s gloves and Kapa‘a went on to win their third straight.
In the earlier junior varsity matches, Kaua‘i’s and Kapa‘a’s girls tied at 1-1, Kapa‘a’s boys won 4-0 and the Island School Voyagers beat Waimea 3-1 in their exhibition match.
