KAPA‘A — Playing under the lights and in the drizzle, Kapa‘a High School’s boys soccer team edged out a tough match against the Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders, defeating them 2-0 and the Lady Red Raiders defeated the Lady Warriors 5-1.
The Raiders, playing makeup games to the originally scheduled Dec. 17, were playing in only their second match of the season. This was Kapa‘a’s fourth.
Kapa‘a (3-0-1) put forth a solid offense outshooting Kaua‘i 7 to 4. Kapa‘a got a shot off which drew Kaua‘i’s goalkeeper Colsen Fernandez to come out with a slide for the block. That left an open goal but Kaua‘i’s defense secured four defenders in the back to cover Fernandez and clear the ball out. A few plays later, another shot cut across Fernandez and went wide right. Kapa‘a got the next three consecutive shots, each resulting in a Fernandez save.
But Kaua‘i wasn’t without its plays. The Raiders took five corner kicks in the first half. The problem was in the finishing. The first corner kick was cleared by Kapa‘a’s Alex Lamadrid, the second crossed by Canaan Bernard resulted in a missfire, as did the next couple and the fifth, taken again by Bernard, was cleared by Tyler Cram.
The two teams were at a deadlock by the half.
Kapa‘a’s first goal of the night came at 7:59 p.m. when Kapa‘a’s Glenn Miguel sent a ball to the center and in the jumble, Bradley Heiser caught an offguard Fernadez.
Cram lofted a pass to Heiser who headed it in for what would have been a second goal had the official erased the goal with an offsides call.
Kaua‘i had the chance to tie the game when Gerry Rayray was sent to the line for a penalty kick. His kick soared high over the goalpost and with the clock winding down, Kaua‘i was pressured to score and score fast.
But it was Kapa‘a who scored next when Kaisin Carrillo passed to an open Miguel for the final goal of the night.
Fernandez finished with nine saves and Kapa‘a’s Christian Tanaguchi finished with six.
In the girls match, Skye Shimabukuru and Ashlyn Ubongen both scored two goals apiece and Malia Kagawa scored on in the second half as Kaua‘i defeated Kapa‘a 5-1.
Shimabukuro was also involved in a nasty collision with Kapa‘a’s goalkeeper Sonya Tupou. That stopped the game for approximately five minutes before Kapa‘a could send Kiah Shigeta-Koizumi back in goal.
Kapa‘a was able to take advantage of the extra stoppage time to avoid being shut out. Larissa Crain scored Kapa‘a’s lone goal during the stoppage.
The next set of matches will be on Saturday at Vidinha Stadium.
