Monique Kan Souza is famous. We all knew that, but in a book about Hawai‘i statehood, she is featured as one of the contestants in a Narcissus Queen lineup. You just have to guess on which page it appears. That was just one of the Christmas presents under the tree, and if you haven’t figured it out by now, Monique can probably tell you.
Mahalo to Jaime Arreola of Duke’s for the nice holiday surprise when Barbara Bloemke was getting ready to leave for the Mainland. Actually, according to Debbie Kincaid, Barbara was one of the casualties of the great O‘ahu blackout since she couldn’t get out of Honolulu.
Hats off to Tom Shigemoto and the rest of the Kaua‘i AJA team on launching its 2009 season (80 years is a long time in baseball). The event was monumental since Mamo Wakuta (he said he was on the Kapa‘a side because “gotta support Kapa‘a”) saw Earl Miyao’s schedule in the paper and came out to watch the games.
Roy Miyashiro was back in the saddle as the AJA scorekeeper again, and is now into digital photography. If everyone is getting those fancy Costco deals, Kirk Chuan is one happy camper.
Gerald Ako did a great job emcee-ing the event and it was just too busy to tell Rev. Kosho Yagi that the sayings outside the Kapa‘a Hongwanji are quite profound. For the people driving on the Westside, check out the ones outside the Hanapepe United Church of Christ.
Happy New Year, Kaua‘i! Stay safe and may 2009 be a lot better than 2008 for everyone.
