Kuhio Highway, the only link between Lihu‘e and the Eastside and North Shore, was closed for about an hour yesterday afternoon following a four-car accident, backing up cars for miles in both directions and frustrating drivers.
According to a preliminary report, three of the four cars involved in the accident were heading south between Marine Camp and the Hilton Kaua‘i Beach Resort at around 12:24 p.m., county spokeswoman Mary Daubert said.
When one car slowed down due to traffic from an earlier accident at the junction of Kuhio Highway and Kapule Highway, a second car pulled to the right in an attempt to avoid a collision.
Unsuccessful, the second car ended up clipping the car, climbing the embankment and flipping over, Daubert reported.
A third car crossed the centerline and clipped a northbound tractor-trailer.
Two Kapa‘a residents sustained minor injuries, Daubert said. They were taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where they were treated and released.
