A pair of 16-year-old males, from Kalahe‘o and Lawai, were driving “recklessly” down a dirt road near Mahaulepu iron gate yesterday afternoon when the driver lost control of the vehicle, according to county spokesperson Mary Daubert.
The Nissan Pathfinder climbed up an embankment and flipped over, she said.
When police arrived at the scene, both males were out of the vehicle and one was confirmed to have serious injuries, Daubert said, and was transported to The Queen’s Medical Center on O‘ahu.
According to comments made by responders on emergency frequency yesterday afternoon just before 2 p.m., the passenger of the vehicle suffered from neck injuries and could not feel his lower extremities.
Daubert confirmed the passenger was the one taken to O‘ahu, but could not comment on the status of the other occupant. The two were unidentified as of press time.
