Varsity girls: Kapa‘a 5, Waimea 0; Varsity boys: Kapa‘a 2, Waimea 0 – KAPA‘A — All five Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation soccer games, both official and exhibition, played yesterday without any problems.
Larissa Crain scored three goals off 10 shots in Kapa’a’s Lady Warriors’ 5-0 shut-out victory over Waimea’s Lady Menehune, the boys varsity teams put up another long and drawn-out battle, Kapa‘a’s girls junior varsity squads dominated with a 6-1 win and both JV boys games ended in a tie.
This was the second meeting between Kapa‘a and Waimea, following a week of canceled or postponed games. Kapa‘a and Waimea are also the only two teams to have played official KIF matches, as Kaua‘i’s teams have yet to play.
In the girls varsity game, Crain scored early in the first two minutes of the game. Sierra Mayer’s shot was kicked out by Waimea’s Stephanie Rudolph which forced a corner kick. That sailed across but a brief scuffle in the box sent Crain to the line for a penalty kick against Jayme Jacinto.
Crain headed in her second goal just minutes later off a corner kick cross from Seri Niimi-Burch.
A goal from Megan Souza put the Lady Warriors up 3-0.
They dominated most of the first half until Waimea enjoyed a late surge in offense. The Menehune were able to take it upfield but Kapa‘a keeper Kiah Shigeta-Koizumi was able to pick up the ball and clear it about 60 yards out. Crain, who was at midfield, picked up on the ball, and with a defender trailing her, fired a shot to the right of Jacinto and straight to the back corner for her hat trick.
It was Kapa‘a 4-0 at the half.
Waimea would go on to hold Kapa‘a to a single goal by Brandi Silva in the second half. Kapa‘a’s girls now improve to 2-0, Waimea to 0-2.
The boys varsity match looked as though it would again end up in a tie like the Kapa‘a/Waimea season opener. The two teams played an intense match which left them both scoreless at the half.
Kapa‘a was able to get 12 shots off in the first half, but half of them floated over the crossbar, the other were stopped by first-year goalkeeper Cody Owen. Waimea was able to get down to Kapa‘a’s box on multiple occasions, but just couldn’t get past Joseph Velasco to take a shot.
It was a nice matchup between the two teams that only a year ago, were very different. Kapa‘a was the dominating team and made it all the way to the Division and Waimea was at the bottom of the KIF.
So far this year, the Menehune have been able to hold off the Warriors — the season opener resulted in near 90-minute deadlock — and yesterday, the only way Kapa‘a got on the boards was by penalty kicks. Both of them came from senior league and state all-star Ikaika Fuerte and both came within the final 10 minutes of the match. The first was in result of a foul and the second a handball was called in the box.
Kapa‘a’s boys now sit at 1-0-1 and Waimea is at 0-1-1.
The set of varsity matches will occur on Tuesday when Kaua‘i will host Waimea for its makeup game.
In the junior varsity matches, Kapa‘a’s girls defeated Waimea 6-1, with the Lady Warriors’ goals coming from Taetra Christensen (3), Lily Fredericksen (1), Paulette Guerra (1) and Katelyn Kaona (1). Ku‘uleinani Breen scored Waimea’s lone goal.
Kapa‘a and Waimea’s boys JV match ended in 0-0 tie, and Island School and Kaua‘i were stuck at 3-3.
Kaua‘i led Island School 1-0 at the half with a goal from Blaise Ferguson. Island School then got back-to-back goals from Aowl Owen and Michael Chamberlain.
Davin Portillo evened up in the 47th minute before both teams went on a lull. Twenty minutes went by and at the 68th minute, Mason Vegas looked to have scored the winning goal for Kaua‘i. But Chamberlain, who has now has five goals on the season, broke away from the pack and found himself 1-on-1 with keeper Dylan Snyder and put it in for the tie.
Island School will next play Kapa‘a, on Saturday.
