KUKUI GROVE — The Kaua‘i Society of Artists Small Works Show Holiday 2008 opened its doors a day ahead of schedule due to a party.
“Carol Ann Davis has been such a strong supporter of the KSA, and since she was having a party for Walter Briant on the night the show was supposed to open, we moved everything up a night,” said Jolly Bodine, one of the 83 featured artists in the show.
Davis also has a piece in the show, “Ha,” an acrylic painting.
Bodine also has a piece, “Falling,” an acrylic, in the show that is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with extended hours to 8 p.m. on Fridays.
Totally, 193 works by 82 artists are featured in the annual event that was juried by Maile Andrade, a mixed media artist and associate professor/graduate chair at Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.
Leslie Hagen was a double winner with “Balancing the Budget” — getting the KSA Invitation Award which earns this piece a spot on next year’s invitation postcard and being the recipient of the Paul Yardley Award.
“Cousin Elizabeth Tudor” by Kathleen Adair Brown earned the Rena Selfe Award and “Koa‘e Kea” by Kathleen Ho was presented the KIUC Award.
Les Ventura’s Norfolk pine bowl earned the KSA Award and Valentino Petrusich’s “Basalt” was presented the “Wunderlust Button” Award. The Banana Patch Studio Award was presented to Michelle Dick for “Repose” and Sean Laakso’s “Hanalei Pier,” already sold within days of the opening, was the recipient of the Michelle Morey Award.
“DASH” by Katherine Gabet was awarded the Art Framers Partners Award and “Koi #1” by Devi Town earned the Kaua‘i Frame Award.
Honorable mentions included Bruce C. Allen Jr. (”Death Across the Street”), Paul B. Allen IV (”Green Sugar”), Cordelia Bailey (”Water Garden”), Fanny Bilodeau (”Egg Free”), Tor Chantara (”Lighthouse with Booby from Overlook”), Lilian de Mello (”Persistence”), Elizabeth Ferris (”No Bananas”), Charles Grotsky (”Chicken Ballet”), Helen Turner (”Hanalei Surfer”) and Diane Wry (”Approaching Storm”).
The Small Works Show is supported in part by the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts through appropriations from the Hawai‘i State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts. Exhibition space is courtesy of the Kukui Grove Shopping Center with the pedestals and panels courtesy of the Garden Island Arts Council.
