Saturday’s games between Kaua‘i and Waimea high schools might be rescheduled for as early as next week, Kapa‘a High School athletic director Greg Gonsalves said yesterday. The games were canceled due to the extreme weather conditions that pounded the islands over the weekend and the potential problems they may have caused.
Gonsalves said he and the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation athletic directors have discussed a tentative date of this coming Tuesday, but that decision will not be made until later this week.
“We just don’t have time to wait till the end of the season to make that decision,” he said.
Gonsalves said they can’t keep canceling games because there are only a certain number of days allotted for the playoffs at the end of the season. Right after that, then, is the start of the girls’ state tournament.
Gonsalves also said that the Kapa‘a versus Island School exhibition that was canceled on Saturday might not be rescheduled because of the already jam-packed junior varsity schedule.
Today’s varsity matchups between Kapa‘a and Kaua‘i should be played as scheduled.
“The games are supposed to be like football; played in the rain unless there’s lightning,” Gonsalves. “Field conditions can be a factor, too.”
As of yesterday, Kapa‘a received roughly 1.43 inches of rain. Heavy rain is expected today.
