KAPA‘A — The Kapa‘a High School boys basketball teams used the Green and White game to serve several purposes including helping to raise funds for the program last night.
It was also used as the program’s tryouts.
Following the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation schedule, the program started with the junior varsity squad (White) dropping a 53-24 matchup against Hanakila, a team from Kilauea.
In the evening finale, members of the varsity squad were interspersed with JV players with the White taking command from the second quarter en route to a 55-37 win over the Green team.
Mits Yokotake, one of the JV team coaches said a lot of the boys had never played basketball before and the idea was to put them on the floor to see where and how training would take place.
“At one point we had just 13 players, but all of a sudden there were 22 players,” Yokotake said.
He added that the returning JV players were moved up to the varsity level for the Green and White game to give them experience at the next level.
That training and floor experience goes beyond the Green and White game as Yokotake said Kapa‘a will be hosting a three-day tournament starting next Thursday with three games each evening.
Tipoff for the first game is 4:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.
Saturday’s final round tipoff starts at 2:30 p.m.
