Leadership Kaua‘i will partner with the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy for a large youth retreat on the North Shore in spring 2009.
They are actively seeking high school sophomores to participate in this life-changing weekend. Both organizations emphasize leadership, citizenship and personal growth, as well as aim to provide an effective training experience for youth and potential leaders and encourage leadership of youth by youth and recognize young people who are rendering service to their communities.
RYLA is an intensive co-ed leadership training and development program that focuses on 10th- and 11th-grade students from all public and private schools in Hawai‘i.
Leadership Kaua‘i currently facilitates the Pi’ina Hoku Youth Leadership Program. Pi’ina Hoku (stars that rise), is a nine-month program where high school juniors learn leadership skills and Hawaiian values.
Both RYLA and Leadership Kaua’i’s Pi’ina Hoku program strive to develop leadership skills, increase self-confidence, and gain exposure to a variety of issues and people.
On the weekend of March 13, 2009, both organizations will work collaboratively to create a youth leadership camp in which Leadership Kaua‘i will organize the curriculum and Rotary District 5000 will assist with funding the three-day camping adventure.
Many important topics will be covered such as collaborative goal setting and planning, growth and development issues island-wide. Brother Noland Conjugation will join the students to discuss native Hawaiian tracking skills.
Wrapping up the retreat will be a day with the Waipa Foundation learning about the cultural significance of kalo. Each student will learn how to plant and cultivate the kalo plant.
High school sophomores and juniors who are interested in being a part of this year’s joint leadership camp can call the Leadership Kaua‘i office at 246-8727 or go online to rotaryd5000.org/RYLA.cfm to download an application. RYLA will only be accepting 15 to 20 applicants, so get application and information submitted as soon as possible.
