Friends of the Path needs volunteers for the Dec. 13 clean up of Ke Ala Hele Makalae — better known as the Eastside Bike and Pedestrian Path.
On the second Saturday of each month Friends of the Path clean up a section of Ke Ala Hele Makalae, the path that goes by the coast. An inspection of Ke Ala Hele Makalae on Nov. 8 turned up marine debris and litter for volunteers to clean up during their Second Saturday Sweep — a net snarl, a discarded engine block and a heavy metal box on the coast in the vicinity of the Kealia lookout.
Five volunteers reported for duty at the regular second Saturday 8:30 a.m. rendezvous at rest pavilion number one. The five proceeded up to the Kealia lookout in two pickup trucks. With assistance from additional volunteers recruited while they were exercising on the path, the team tugged ropes attached to a hand truck to haul out the engine block and metal strongbox. With further assistance from motivated individuals in the lookout parking lot, the engine block was hefted up a ramp into a truck.
The net snarl, several discarded tires and about a dozen large bags of rubbish were removed from the area. Following the usual potluck lunch, Ishida trucked the net snarl and trash bags to the Kapa‘a Transfer Station for disposal.
Friends of the Path committee chair Brett Ishida is recruiting volunteers for the Dec. 13 sweep to assure that enough Friends of the Path participate in clearing out this area to make it a day of building community pride and light work.
