Broyles of Waimea High School successfully defended her individual cross country title, and that’s how she, Naholoholo, Sakai and many others who completed a successful regular season, landed on this year’s fall season KIF All-Stars list.
Setter Naholoholo was one of three Kaua‘i High School girls volleyball players who landed a coveted spot as an all-star and earned the highest honor of Player of the Year, as voted on by coaches and officials. Teammates joining Naholoholo as an all-star were teammates fellow seniors Jori Jasper and Tiani Esaki.
“It feels pretty good. I didn’t think I would get it because there were so many other good players out there. Waimea and Kapa‘a have good players and that’s why I was so surprised to get it,” Naholoholo said.
Rounding out the team were the underclassmen of Waimea — Jayme Jacinto, Brandi Victorino and Jazzy Bradbury — and Kapa‘a High School senior Mai’lika Napoleon. Jacinto was the only athlete to make it onto this year’s all-star list in two sports, cross country and volleyball.
First year varsity head coach Corey Morishita was named Coach of the Year.
Sakai, a wide receiver for the Raiders, not only led the team in receptions and yards, but led the league averaging 105.8 yards a game. He was named the KIF’s Offensive Player of the Year and teammate Teila Huni was named Defensive Player of the Year. Kaua‘i dominated in the football category, placing 22 of the 26 slots allotted.
Head coach Derek Borrero was named Coach of the Year for the second year in a row.
Volleyball and football were the only sports to hand out players and coach of the year honors.
But it was Waimea who took control of girls riflery, cheerleading and cross country. The Menehune riflery girls took four of the five spots, the cheerleaders took six out of 10 and the boys and girls cross country teams were nearly half of the all-stars.
Every season a list of all-stars is published, recognizing those who have excelled in their sport or sports.
