Nancy Goodale
Nancy Sloggett Goodale (Wilcox), kama‘aina, philanthropist and community volunteer, passed away on Kaua‘i Monday, Nov. 3, 2008. Born on Kaua‘i Feb. 12, 1929, she graduated from Punahou School and attended Pine Manor College in Massachusetts.
Survived by husband, Holbrook Goodale (married on June 25, 1948), and four children, David Goodale (Patrice) of Kilauea, Katherine Richardson (Wayne) of Lihu‘e, Joan Evans (Randy) of Santa Barbara, and Dr. Richard Goodale (Karen) of Kilauea. Seven grandchildren, Matthew Goodale, Wayne Richardson IV, Tony Evans, Juliet Evans, Katherine Richardson, Ian Goodale and Dylan Goodale. Brother: Dick Sloggett (Loree) and step-mother Anna Sloggett.
Parents (deceased): Richard and Sue Sloggett. Sister (deceased): Sally Sloggett DeHarne; grandparents (deceased): Etta Wilcox and Digby Sloggett of Kaua‘i and Dr. Arthur and Edna Reynolds of Flint, Mich.
Nancy participated as a member, volunteer and/or served as an officer in the following Hawai‘i organizations: YWCA, Wilcox Hospital, Waioli and Nuhou Corp. (Grove Farm Homesteads), National Tropical Botanical Garden, Mabel Wilcox Foundation, Girl Scouts, Island School, Kauai PTA, Kaua‘i Museum, Kaua‘i Historical Society, St. Michael’s Church and the Mokihana Club.
Nancy had true sense of selfless service and real commitment to the community of Kaua‘i. Her leadership was quiet and steady following in the steps of her grandmother, Etta, and aunts, Mabel and Elsie Wilcox.
“She walked in grace and beauty and she was about the best thing that God ever created.”
Funeral services will be Nov. 11 at 4:30 p.m. at the Lihu‘e Cemetery. Aloha attire. No flowers. A gathering to celebrate the life of Nancy Goodale will follow the services at Grove Farm Museum.

Susan McFarland
Susan McFarland died Nov. 1, 2008, on Kaua‘i at the age of 56.
Born July 8, 1952 in Watsonville, Calif., she was a flower broker.
She is survived by husband John McFarland; mother Eleanor Matley; children Peter Brown, Joshua Brown, Zayna McFarland, Amber Amabile; brother Michael Matley; sister Judy McCabe; nine grandchildren, Tristain, Madyson, Kara, Kylie, Bailey, Gabby, Chloe, Trevin and Kate.
Celebration of life will be held from 5 p.m. at Lydgate Park on Nov, 11, 2008.
Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick/Kauai Mortuary.
Albert Nawai
Albert Lanakila Nawai died on Nov. 5, 2008, at home at the age of 59.
Born on Oct. 5, 1949, in Honolulu he was a retired heavy equipment operator.
Preceded in death by mother Matilda Hiilawe Nawai; fathers Robert Nawai and Herman Kaikaka; brothers Richard Lanakila Nawai, Robert Kaialau, Hilgard Kaialau, Wilber Kaialau, Makana Kaialau and Herman Kaiaka; sister Mary Nawai.
Survived by wife Nanette Noelani Nawai, daughters Albette (Alan Bajo) Nawai and Alexis Nawai both of Waimea, hanai daughters Jocelyn McGhion, Tia Koerte and Melissa Zorn; stepson Michael Brandon Tanaka of O‘ahu; mother Otilla Kaiaka; brothers Robert (Lei) Nawai of Kaua‘i, Bobby Kaikaka of O‘ahu, Paul (Margie) Kaikaka of O‘ahu and Calvin (Debbie) Kaikaka of New Jersey, sisters Elizabeth (Robert) Freitas, Meha Warkentin and Otillia “Cissy” Kaiaka; sister-in-law Linda Nawai; numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family at 1 p.m. on Nov. 15, 2008, at the Kauai Veterans Cemetery Pavilion with service at 2 p.m. Casual attire is suggested.
Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary.
Bernadine West
Bernadine West died Nov. 8, 2008, at the Rehabilitation Center, Mount Vernon, Mo., at the age of 79.
Born March 29, 1929 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., she was a bank teller.
Preceded in death by parents John and Constance (Bistrick) Kaminski; three sisters and two brothers.
Survived by husband Lewis H. West; son Lewis R. West; daughter Ruth Ann West of Mount Vernon, Mo.; three sisters Helen Austin and Connie Rubasak of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Marion Lyons of Allentown, Pa.; grand-daughters Kassandra, Pauline and Alexi West and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Nov. 11, 2008 at the the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home, Mount Vernon, Mo., with Father Paul Teter officiating.
Burial will be held at a later date in Hanover, Pa.
