Waimea High School’s Caralyn Broyles got her first state championship medal yesterday at the Honolulu Marathon/Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Cross Country Championships held on the hilly campus of Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy.
Broyles, a two-time Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation champion, finished with a time of 22:38 and a 16th-place finish. She was the top finisher of all the KIF representatives.
The top 20 finishers leave the championships with a medal.
Kaua‘i can also claim at least a share of a bronze medal. Ashlee Jimenez of the Lihu‘e finished in third place with a time of 21:19.95 while representing Kamehamehameha Schools Kapalama.
Bailey Massenburg of King Kekaulike clocked a time of 20:42.90 to win the individual girls title. Massenburg, last year’s bronze medalist, finished well ahead of the pack and the second-place finisher Tia Greenwell of Honokaa.
The Punahou girls won the Buffanblu’s fourth consecutive team title and the school’s ninth in the last 15 years. Punahou placed four runners in the top 20 for the top score and finished with a low-total score of 48.
Seabury Hall (117) finished second in the team competition. Kamehameha Schools Kapalama (118) finished third.
Bryce Jenkins of Leilehua won his third-straight individual boys title yesterday, crossing the finish line at 17:13. With his top-finish, his teammates Margarito Martinez’s fourth-place finish, the Mules won their second consecutive team title.
The KIF’s best finish for the boys came from Kapa‘a’s Alex Lamadrid who crossed the line at 20:29.75.
