A small project goes big time as the book “Rainbow Cookies,” a compilation of 25 Hanalei School kindergartners’ ideas was released. This 58 page, full color, hard back book was told and illustrated entirely by 4 and 5 year olds of the 2007-2008 kindergarten class. Stories include such titles as “Chasing Geckos,” “Lau Lau for Breakfast,” “Ice Cold Coconuts” and “Stringing the Leis.”
Rainbow Cookies was the second biggest auction item from last year’s Starry Nights Fundraising event at the Princeville Hotel. The winning bid fetched $1,200 for the school in its original, single copy version and was bought by Keely and Pierce Brosnan. The book received offers of commercial publication before being self-published under the company, Rainbow Cookies, LLC to insure more funds would go to the school.
The Brosnans endorsed and wrote a forward for the book including a tagline for the back cover that reads:
“These delightful and imaginative stories … seamlessly blend Hawaii’s natural beauty, unique history and culture, and contemporary lifestyle, illustrating that one can find paradise in their own backyard.”
The book retails for $16.99 and is available online at rainbowcookies.org as well as at Hanalei School, Hanalei Surf Company Back Door, Magic Dragon Toy Store in Princeville, Hanalei Gourmet Deli, Lil Oskar’s Children’s Boutique in Kilauea, and Border’s Books and Music in Lihu‘e where a book signing event will be hosted Dec. 6. Each sale provides $12 that goes directly to the school.
