Waimea 3, Kapa‘a 2 – Waimea High School’s girls volleyball team came up with a crucial win last night to stay undefeated in Round 2, defeating Kapa‘a High School in five sets 25-23, 25-21, 20-25, 13-25 and 15-10.
The defending Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation champion Lady Menehune needed the win last night if they were continue their campaign in taking Round 2 and force a playoff against Round 1 champs Kaua‘i High School for the round or the title.
Waimea relied heavily on the offense from Jayme Jacinto, Brandee Victorino, Hamiha Arquette and Chelsea Nawai.
After Waimea went up two sets, it seemed as though Kapa‘a had worn the Menehune down. They were trailing for most of that third set and won to keep from making it an early night.
Kapa‘a then forced a fifth set by winning the next set by 15. Megan Souza would bear the brunt of the work on defense from the back row to keep Kapa‘a competitive.
In the junior varsity match, Waimea won 25-11, 19-25 and 25-17.
Kaua‘i 3, Island School 0 – Kaua‘i breezed through three sets over Island School 25-11, 25-14 and 25-17.
Waileia Kanealii finished with 14 assists and four aces. Mikaila Naholoholo posted nine assists, three aces, two kills and two blocks.
Jori Jasper led the team in kills with eight. Malia Kagawa followed with seven.
In the JV match, Kaua‘i swept all three matches 25-9, 25-9 and 25-15.
Kaua‘i next hosts Waimea. The outcome of that game may determine which kind of playoff the two teams will have.
