Kaua‘i 29, Waimea 0 – Some say good things come in threes. There’s the three wisemen, three legged races, the three tenors and three cheers for the home team of Kaua‘i High School.
Three was a good number for the team last night as Trent Allianic hit three field goals — from 24, 27 and 21 yards, Trey Shimabukuro threw three touchdowns to three different receivers and the Red Raiders got the most running yards from No. 3, running back Peleku Yasay in Kaua‘i’s shut 29-0 shutout of Waimea High School at Vidinha Stadium.
Playing in their season home opener, the defending Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation champions held the Menehune to only 110 yards rushing and minus 7 in passing, compared to how they finished — 238 total yards of offense.
Both teams went scoreless in the first and halfway through the second, Allianic hit the first of his two consecutive field goals of the quarter to put the Raiders on the board. He was 3-for-4 in field goals and 2-for-3 in extra points.
Kaua‘i recovered a Waimea fumble on the Menehune 29 yard with some time on the board to try for a touchdown before the end of the half. Shimabukuro got one when he connected with Scott Taylor 10 yards out with under 20 seconds left in the half.
The Raiders went into half-time 13-0.
In the third, a long snap to Cody Owen for a punt soared way above his head forcing him to scramble for the ball and run it. A call against Waimea gave Kaua‘i a first and goal, which resulted in a touchdown pass from Shimabukuro to Christian Fort. Less than a minute later, Shimabukuro threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to an open Sheldon Sakai.
The Raiders (2-0, 1-0 KIF) remain undefeated at home within the last three years. Waimea (2-2, 1-1 KIF) handed Kaua‘i its only league loss last year at Hanapepe Stadium.
Shimabukuro was 13-of-25 for 170 yards and Yasay rushed for 53 yards on 16 carries.
