Search for Kilauea man suspended

KILAUEA — After utilizing much of its resources for nearly three days, the Kaua‘i Fire Department yesterday suspended its search for Robert Nakashima Sr., an 80-year-old Kilauea fisherman who has been missing since Monday, according to county officials.

“I want to thank everyone who assisted in the search for Mr. Nakashima including the Coast Guard, Civil Air Patrol, all of our fire department personnel as well as friends and family,” said Kaua‘i Fire Chief Robert Westerman, who noted that the search was suspended at 11:30 a.m. yesterday, according to a press release.

“We’ve transitioned to a passive mode in this case and are prepared to reactivate our personnel should we receive any new information,” Westerman said in the release.

County officials said that family and friends were not yet ready to comment.
