Island chefs judge food competition at Kaua‘i Farm Bureau Fair

The Home Economics Show at the Kaua‘i Farm Bureau Fair opening Thursday has a great lineup of judges for the two “Special Food” contests and “Preserved Foods” division this year. Chef Guy Higa from the Marriott in Lihu‘e, Derrick Hosaka of Koa Trading, Chef Philip Wang from Peter Merriman’s of Maui and Po‘ipu and Chef Michael Stauber from Joe’s on the Green in Po‘ipu will judge the cakes, cookies and muffins at the fair at Vidinha Stadium.

There are still two weeks to recipe test for the upcoming contests. Entrants can compete in two contests. There will be a special flavor contest with original cakes, cookies, breads, muffins or other dessert using coffee as the ingredient or a muffin contest using cornmeal or fruit bran. The recipe must accompany your entry. No entry needing refrigeration will be accepted.

Other categories include a craft contest, arts and crafts, preserved foods, clothing and needlework. For rules and regulations visit the UH Cooperative Extension Service in the State Building, at 3063 Eiwa St., Room 210.
