It took a year of nominations from three different people but Eugene Ancheta finally consented to be the August winner of the Wailua-Kapa‘a Neighborhood Association’s “Front Yard Pride” award.
For lava rock, Japanese artifacts, items from Bali and exotic plants, Ancheta said he “has his sources.”
Born and raised in Kealia, he bought his house on Kahala Road in Kapahi in 1999. During the day he’s a lifeguard at Kealia Beach and is an instructor for the award winning Jr. Lifeguard program. In the evening he is an artist in his front yard garden.
“Oh geez, I can go until midnight,” he said. He also practices his craft in his mother’s yard.
A normal front yard to a work of art evolved in 2 1/2 years. There are koi and lily ponds in his future too. Ancheta will receive his plaque at 6 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Kapa‘a Library.
Police Chief Darryl Perry as the guest speaker will give the presentation “East Kauai: Is it as safe as we think?” The event is free and open to the public.
Nominations for beautiful front yards in the 96746 zip code can be sent to chairman Helena Cooney at helena1824@aol.com or call for more information, 822-1885. The only criteria is that the residents must do the work themselves.
