The Kaua‘i Girlz finished with silver medals in the Hawai‘i International Cup soccer tournament played on O‘ahu, July 3 to 6.
Coached by Christian Marston, the girls suffered just one loss in the tournament, a 2-1 drop to the Honolulu Soccer Club-Bulls who went on to take the overall trophy in the Girls Under 14 division.
Opening against a Mainland team, the Avalanche, the Kaua‘i Girlz relied on its defense led by Lily Fredericksen, Kailee Carrillo and Tatiana Dykhouse to finish in a tie.
Kaulana Haneberg, the team’s leading score, hit the back of the net in the Girls’ first outing before the defense stepped up through the final minutes of play.
Katelyn Kaona netted two goals against Kolohe. She got help with goals from Sunny Ohlen, Taetra Christensen, Rachel Hinkle and Kaulana Haneberg, states a press release from the Kaua‘i Soccer Club’s Gwen Tamura.
Kaulana Haneberg netted the sole goal in the Kaua‘i Girlz’ 2-1 loss to the HSC-Bulls.
“This was a really good game and we gained in experience by playing against the Bulls,” said Carrillo, a Kaua‘i Girlz’ player.
Fredericksen and Kaona switched positions in the Kaua‘i Girls’ final game, a 3-2 win over Real ‘94.
On the offense, Fredericksen unleashed two goals with Haneberg capping the win with a goal.
