Super Stars Kaua‘i, formerly known as Kaua‘i Idol, began yesterday with qualifying tryouts at the Big Kmart in Lihu‘e.
Of the 24 contestants, 19 moved on to the next round, which will take place during the Hospice Fourth of July celebration at Vidinha Stadium at 4 p.m.
More than 200 people turned out to watch the competition yesterday, which featured four repeat performers from last year’s event, all of whom said they returned because they wanted another chance to perform.
Among the participants were a mother-son duo, a family act of two sisters, and a rapper. Asked why they came out to tryout, most agreed that the grand prize of a trip to New York City was the biggest motivation.
Based on the judges’ opinions, the best performers will move through each round, narrowing to a final group of 10 who will perform for the title at the county fair in August.
Contestants are judged on originality, crowd appeal, vocal range, aloha spirit and stage presence.
The first-place winner receives $1,000, a trophy and the opportunity to travel with the Kaua‘i Visitors Bureau to New York City to perform at Madison Square Garden.
The second-place winner receives $750, and the third-place winner receives $500.
A people’s choice award based on online voting throughout the duration of the contest will be given to the performer with the most votes.
