DES MOINES, Iowa — University of Hawai‘i athletes Amber Kaufman and Emily Sheppard advanced to the high jump finals of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships after each cleared 5-9.75 (1.77m) in yesterday’s qualifying round at Drake Stadium.
The top 16 qualifiers advance to Saturday’s finals in an attempt to win the national championship.
Each of the 16 qualifiers cleared 5-9.75. Sheppard cleared that mark on her second attempt while Kaufman posted the mark on her third and final attempt.
The last UH athlete to capture a national championship was Gwen Loud in the long jump at the 1984 Outdoor Championship.
Tomorrow, UH heptathlete Annett Wichmann will compete in her third NCAA Outdoor Championship. The event concludes on Saturday.
