Gunto Kimura
Gunto Kimura of Kalaheo died May 21, 2008, at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital at the age of 86. Born Oct. 1, 1921, in Lawa‘i, he was the Kalaheo barber for 47 years.
He is survived by wife Sugako Kimura; daughters Christina (Roy) Shioi of Pearl City and Alisa Kimura of Honolulu; two grandchildren; sisters Kikue Kato of Kalaheo, Jeanie Ochikubo of Hilo and Mildred Shimizu of Mililani.
Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 14, at the Kauai Veterans Cemetery Pavilion; interment to follow. Casual attire is suggested and the family requests that flowers be omitted.
Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary Ltd.
Juan Caberto
Juan “Carlos” Palaraon Caberto of Kapa‘a died May 29, 2008, at Straub Hospital at the age of 83. Born May 24, 1925, on O‘ahu, he was a retired maintenance/carpenter for the county of Kaua‘i.
He was preceded in death by parents Mariano and Feliza Caberto, brother Federico Caberto Sr. and sister Connie Caberto-Balauro.
He is survived by wife Gregoria “Gloria” Villatora Caberto of Kapa‘a; sons John (Sue) Caberto of Hanama‘ulu, Ronald (Loreen) Caberto of Kilauea, Anthony Caberto and Leroy Caberto of Kapahi, Carl “Kali” (Holly) Caberto of Wailua Homesteads and Jerry Caberto of Kapahi; daughter-in-law Carlette Souza of ‘Oma‘o; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister Virginia Mary Caberto of ‘Ele‘ele; brothers Antone and Richard Caberto of ‘Ele‘ele; and numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Viewing will be held on Saturday, June 14, from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, with Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Kauai Memorial Gardens. The family requests casual attire.

Esteban Largusa
Esteban “Raleigh” Largusa of Kapa‘a died on June 8, 2008, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 66. He was born on April 21, 1942, in Kilauea. He was a retired rigging supervisor for the government at Long Beach Naval Shipyard.
He is survived by wife Gloria; daughters Marla (Kevin) Boddy and Laura (Tyrone) Coleman-Vialdores; six grandsons, all of California; brothers Ben (Fely) Largusa of Las Vegas, Frank (Kathy) Largusa of California, Ming (Janet) Largusa of Lihu‘e, Norman (Edie) Largusa of California; foster brother Bob (Dolly) Mandap of Honolulu; sisters Aurea Laymon of Kapa‘a, Dolly Espina of Kapa‘a, Loretta (Ken) Goode of California, Elaine Prabula of Honolulu; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family on Monday, June 16, at St. Catherine Church from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe.

Veronica Gomez
Veronica Puanani Gomez of Lawa‘i died at home on June 7, 2008, at the age of 67. She was born in ‘Ele‘ele on Aug. 3, 1940, to Ethel and Alex Gomez. Aunty Puanani graduated from St. Francis High School on O‘ahu and the Kauai Technical Institute. She retired from Kauai Electric after 30 years of service in the accounting department. She was also a retired officer and member of Hale O Na‘Ali‘i O Hawai‘i.
She is survived by brother James (Heike) Fujita; niece Michelle (Richard) Anama; nephews Chris (Jenny) Fujita, Kawika Fujita and Keola (Andrea) Fujita; grand-nieces and grand-nephews Laakea and Piikea Fujita, Kalei and Kanoa Fujita, and Kela and Pono Anama; cousins Luana Yamato, Nani Yamato, and Ulu Lee; Uncle George Furtado; Aunt Mildred Miller; and numerous other cousins and friends.
Aunty Puanani will be remembered for her kind spirit and generous heart. She loved dancing kachi kachi, singing Hawaiian music, cooking and crocheting. She took care of many and was devoted to her family. She will be missed by all who knew her. The family wishes to extend its gratitude to all those who touched Aunty Puanani’s life, especially in her final days.
Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Friday, June 20, at Holy Cross Church. Mass will be at 11 a.m., followed by burial at the church cemetery. Casual attire is suggested and flowers omitted.

Gayle Kohatsu
Gayle Kehaulani Kohatsu of Kaua‘i died on May 30, 2008, at Straub Clinic and Hospital at the age of 59. Born on Aug. 25, 1948, in Honolulu, she lived on the island of Kaua‘i for 21 years.
She is survived by husband Eldon N. Kohatsu Sr.; sons Eldon N. ( Rolinda) Kohatsu Jr., Michael H. K. (Lani) Kohatsu of Honolulu, Brian T. Kohatsu, Dean K.N. (Dayna) Kohatsu of Kaua‘i; daughter Marisa T.U. (James) Berardi of Kaua‘i; brothers Agenhart K. (Dorie) Ellis Jr., Daniel “Poki” (Hazel) Ellis, Gilbert “Kala” (Penny) Ellis of Honolulu, and Raynard (Janice) Ellis of Kaua‘i; sister Lianne Noelani (Harry) Donato of Honolulu; 22 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren of Honolulu.
Funeral services will be held at Hawaiian Memorial Park Mortuary in Honolulu on Monday, June 16. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Services will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The family requests casual attire. There will be a second service held on Kaua‘i at Hanama‘ulu Beach Park (Big Pavilion) on Sunday, June 22, at 1:30 p.m. She will be laid to rest at Kalapaki Bay Park Memorial Gardens on Kaua‘i at a later date.
Daniel Funamura II
Daniel Chip Funamura II of Las Vegas, Nev., died June 15, 2008, at the age of 42. He was born in Lihu‘e on July 15, 1965. A graduate of the University of Hawai‘i with a degree in economics, he was a loan officer on Kaua‘i. In Las Vegas he was a quick-poker dealer and successful professional gambler.
Funamura was preceded in death by his brother, Stanley.
He is survived by parents Dan and Barbara Funamura, brother Mark, sister Joni (Rodney) Funamura-Sasil, and favorite niece Justice.
A viewing will be from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at Borthwick Kauai Mortuary in Koloa; a service will follow at 4 p.m.
The family asks that flowers be omitted; aloha attire is suggested.

Lucas Calves
Lucas John Calves of Puhi died May 20, 2008, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 42. Born Feb. 15, 1966, in Waimea, he was a groundsman.
Calves was preceded in death by brother Samuel Mark Calves.
He is survived by parents Lucas and Patricia Calves, son Quinn Calves, daughter Jessica Calves, sisters Peggy Ayers and Salina Calves, brother Matthew Calves and numerous aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins.
A service will be held Saturday, June 14, at Borthwick Mortuary Chapel in Koloa; viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m., with prayer services at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Hanapepe Public Cemetery. Casual attire is suggested.

Ricardo Garma Sr.
Ricardo A. Garma Sr. of Hanalei died May 31, 2008, at Garden Isle Healthcare at the age of 94. Born Feb. 14, 1914, in Camaling Tarlac, Philippines, he was a retired taro farmer.
Garma is preceded in death by wife Marciana, parents Benito and Leona Garma of Camaling Tarlac, and brother Tranquilino Garma of Winnipeg, Canada.
He is survived by children Rosalina Linda (Ernie) of Kapahi, Yolanda (George) Baldwin of Kapahi, Ricardo (Carol) Garma Jr. of Hanalei, Leona Garma Lemn of Anahola, and Norbert Garma of Hanalei; 16 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday, June 19, at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., with Mass at 10 a.m. and burial to follow at Kealia Catholic Cemetery.

Michael Iida
Michael Kunio Iida of Kalaheo died May 30, 2008, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 18.
Born in Lihu‘e, he was a student at Waimea High School.
Iida was preceded in death by his father, Darrin Kunio Iida; grandfather Jose Raposas; and great-grandfather Cirilio Raposas.
He is survived by mother Teressa Han (Derwin M. Nohara) Iida; brothers Mark Kunio Iida, Davin Nohara and Michael Nohara; sister Deedriana Nohara; grandparents Yon “Hannah” Raposas, Daniel (Lim) Iida and Diana (Danny) Navarro; great-grandparents Rosalina Raposas, Satoyu (James) Kurihara and Kikuyo Ota; and numerous uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.
